Brewery story
Allanwater Brewhouse was established in 2009 in Bridge of Allan, near Stirling, initially operating under the Tinpot name before becoming Wash House. Beginning with a one-barrel brewing plant designed for speciality beers, the brewery developed a reputation for producing distinctive small-batch ales inspired by Scottish brewing traditions. In 2018, its beers and branding were brought together under the Allanwater Brewhouse name, reflecting its connection to the local community and surrounding landscape.
The brewery draws inspiration from the long history of beer in Scotland, particularly the traditions of Stirling and Bridge of Allan. Under master brewer Douglas Ross, whose experience spans decades, Allanwater produces a changing selection of handcrafted beers using natural ingredients sourced locally wherever possible. Its range includes ales such as City of Stirling, Brig'o Allan and Stirling 900 Ale, alongside seasonal and experimental creations. The business also produces ciders and small-batch gins incorporating local botanicals.
Allanwater has developed into a destination for visitors interested in experiencing brewing firsthand. Its brewery tours introduce guests to the equipment, ingredients and techniques behind its beers, while Brewer for a Day and Half-Day Brewer experiences offer the opportunity to work alongside the brewing team. These activities bring the craft of brewing to life, connecting visitors with both the practical process and the history that inspires the brewery's recipes.
The onsite brewhouse bar has become an important part of Bridge of Allan's social scene, offering freshly brewed ales, stone-baked pizzas and a welcoming atmosphere. Its Scottish-inspired pizza menu features creations named after Robert the Bruce, William Wallace and Mary Queen of Scots, while regular live music, beer festivals and pub quizzes bring the community together. With its combination of traditional brewing, creative experimentation and lively hospitality, Allanwater Brewhouse continues to celebrate the brewing heritage of central Scotland.
