Anglo-Oregon Brewing Company is a small independent brewery based in Newport, South Wales. Founded in 2015 and inspired in part by founder Toby Jones' Oregon roots and love of West Coast IPA, the brewery produces small batches of bottle-conditioned ale, with ranges celebrating the history, heritage and landscape of Newport.
Brewery story
Anglo-Oregon Brewing Company was founded in the Forest of Dean in 2015, combining an interest in traditional small-scale brewing with founder Toby Jones' connection to Oregon in the United States. Born and raised in Oregon, Toby developed a love for the West Coast IPA style and wanted to bring some of that influence to the beers he was creating in and around Newport.
The brewery relocated to Newport in 2017, moving into a garage-based setup in Nash. Operating on a deliberately small scale, Anglo-Oregon brews around 240 litres at a time, typically brewing once a month. Its beer is now focused on 330ml bottle-conditioned ales rather than cask or keg, with the brewery also licensed for direct off-sales.
Newport has become an important part of the brewery's identity. Several ranges are organised into themed trilogies, including the Newport Levels Trilogy, Chartists Trilogy and Newport Heritage Trilogy, using beer as a way of exploring stories and places connected with the city and surrounding area. The brewery also regularly produces special and commemorative releases.
Toby's connection with Newport extends well beyond brewing. A nautical archaeologist by profession, he began working with the Newport Medieval Ship Project in 2004, helping oversee the conservation and reconstruction of the fifteenth-century merchant vessel. That interest in local history and heritage provides a natural connection with the historical themes that run through many Anglo-Oregon beers.
The brewing team also includes Kristian Hanbury, whose approach combines an interest in developing new and seasonal beers with a wider enthusiasm for craftsmanship and experimentation. Together, the small team continues to produce beer on a scale that allows Anglo-Oregon to retain its hands-on character while developing recipes around both brewing tradition and new ideas.
Today, Anglo-Oregon remains a distinctly small-scale Newport brewery, producing bottle-conditioned beer in limited batches rather than pursuing larger-volume production. Its identity brings together Oregon brewing inspiration, Welsh and Newport heritage and a personal approach to recipe development, resulting in beers closely connected to the people, stories and places behind them.
