Brewery story

About Two Towns Down Brewery

Two Towns Down was founded in 2019 by Sandy McKelvie after he graduated from Heriot-Watt University with a degree in brewing and distilling.

Sandy had already gained brewing experience while studying, beginning at The Hanging Bat and later working in recipe development at Black Isle Brewing. He also built experience through collaborations with breweries including Poppels, Young Master, Dog Falls and Brew Toon.

Two Towns Down initially operated as a nomadic brewery. Sandy brewed on other breweries' equipment while storing packaged beer in his parents' garage, with the long-term ambition of establishing a permanent brewery and taproom in his hometown of Paisley.

That ambition carried particular local significance, with Two Towns Down aiming to become the first brewery operating in Paisley for around 125 years following the closure of the town's historic Sacell Brewery.

The permanent brewery and taproom opened at 47 Back Sneddon Street on 1 November 2022. The new site brought production, packaged beer and a public taproom together under one roof.

Production has continued to expand, with the brewery increasing both brew length and fermentation capacity while producing four core beers alongside a large number of limited and experimental releases.

Paisley's textile heritage plays an important part in the brewery's identity. Sandy's family has generations of links to the town's mills, and every Two Towns Down can incorporates an interpretation of the famous Paisley pattern.

The brewery describes the creativity and innovation associated with Paisley pattern as an inspiration for its beers, combining Scotland's brewing traditions with locally sourced ingredients and a modern approach to recipes and styles.

The taproom has become a significant part of the brewery's community presence. It opens every Friday and Saturday, serving around ten house-brewed beers and regularly hosting quizzes, Guest Fest weekends and other events.

Guest Fest weekends expand the taproom selection to around twenty to twenty-five beers, combining Two Towns Down releases with beers from guest breweries and food from local producers such as Paisley Pie Co.

Two Towns Down also runs guided brewery tours throughout the year on selected Saturday mornings. Tours cover the brewing equipment and production process before finishing with a tasting of the brewery's beers and food.

Today the brewery continues to combine small-scale independent production with an active taproom and events programme, maintaining strong links with Paisley and its local community.
