Independent Lancashire microbrewery established in 2015 by two friends and homebrewers, Alan and Dave. Based at Red Moss Farm in Quernmore, near Lancaster, Avid operates a 7.5-barrel brewery using water sourced from a local borehole. Producing pale ales, golden ales and seasonal stouts, the brewery supplies traditional cask beer and bag-in-box ales to local pubs, restaurants, festivals and events.
Brewery story
Avid Brewing Co was established in 2015 by two friends, Alan and Dave, whose shared enthusiasm for beer developed over several decades. Having first met around 30 years earlier, the pair gradually became more interested in the flavours and craftsmanship behind traditional real ales. A full-mash brewing course, received as a birthday gift, inspired them to begin experimenting with their own recipes. Their first attempts took place in a garage in St Michaels, where they discovered the satisfaction of transforming simple ingredients into beers they genuinely enjoyed drinking.
As their brewing skills developed, Alan and Dave became increasingly ambitious. They experimented with recipes, refined their techniques and upgraded their equipment, eventually working with a 90-litre Powell Brewing System. Their range expanded to include zesty American-style pale ales, refreshing golden ales and rich winter stouts. The name Avid Brewing Co reflected their enthusiasm for both making and enjoying good beer. What began as a hobby gradually became a serious undertaking, with reconditioned casks allowing them to produce and distribute genuine real ale.
Growing demand encouraged the founders to expand beyond their original small-scale operation. An opportunity arose when Bowland Brewery in Clitheroe decided to replace its brewing equipment, allowing Avid to acquire a larger commercial system. After nine months of planning, infrastructure work and installation, the brewery established its new home at Red Moss Farm in Quernmore, near Lancaster. The 7.5-barrel brewhouse uses water sourced from a local borehole, while the original 90-litre system remains available for pilot brewing and recipe development.
Today, Avid Brewing Co focuses on producing flavourful, carefully crafted ales for pubs, restaurants, festivals and events across the local area. Alongside traditional casks, the brewery uses bag-in-box packaging to supply beer in different quantities, making its range accessible to smaller venues and private gatherings. Despite growing from a garage-based hobby into a commercial microbrewery, Alan and Dave have retained the curiosity and enthusiasm that inspired their first successful brew. Their approach remains rooted in experimentation, quality and the simple pleasure of sharing good beer.
