Brewery story
Birmingham Brewing Company was established in 2016 in Stirchley, a neighbourhood in south Birmingham with a growing reputation for independent food, drink and creative businesses. Proudly rooted in the city, the brewery set out to produce distinctive, high-quality beers that local people could enjoy and identify with. Its philosophy is built around making great beer accessible to everyone, combining traditional brewing ingredients with modern techniques and a strong sense of Birmingham identity. From the beginning, the brewery has celebrated its Brummie heritage through its beers and its commitment to the local community.
A defining feature of Birmingham Brewing Company is its commitment to producing beers that are both vegan and gluten-free. Rather than using traditional animal-derived finings, the brewery employs an enzyme-based process that also reduces gluten content. Every beer is laboratory tested to ensure it contains less than 20 parts per million of gluten, meeting the threshold for gluten-free labelling. The brewery places considerable importance on ingredient quality, using British floor-malted grain, carefully selected hops and barley, with Welsh mountain water forming a significant part of its brewing process.
Environmental responsibility is another important part of the brewery's identity. Its brewing operations and taproom are powered entirely by renewable energy, including wind and solar sources. Spent grain and other brewing by-products are collected by Park Farm in Frankley for use as livestock feed, while packaging and other waste are recycled wherever possible. Birmingham Brewing Company also supports charitable organisations through selected beer sales, including donations to Midlands Air Ambulance Charity from Sober Brummie and previous fundraising for Birmingham and Solihull Women's Aid through its Self Isolating Brummie beer.
Today, Birmingham Brewing Company operates a welcoming taproom at its Stirchley brewery, where visitors can enjoy freshly brewed beer while overlooking the equipment used to produce it. A beer garden beside the River Rea provides outdoor seating, while the bar also offers locally sourced cider, natural wine, spirits and soft drinks. Regular events help bring people together, reinforcing the brewery's belief that independent businesses play an important role in building strong communities. By combining inclusive brewing, sustainability and local pride, Birmingham Brewing Company continues to champion its home city through beer.
