Crafty Devil Brewing is an independent Cardiff brewery founded in 2014 by friends Adam Edinborough and Rhys Watkins. Starting out in Rhys' garden shed in west Cardiff, the brewery was created to make fresh, full-flavoured beer without compromise and has since grown into an established local producer of canned, bottled and keg beer.
Brewery story
Crafty Devil Brewing was founded in 2014 by best friends Adam Edinborough and Rhys Watkins, beginning in Rhys' garden shed in west Cardiff. The pair set out with a straightforward aim: to brew the kind of beer they wanted to drink themselves, focusing on freshness, flavour and refusing to compromise on the character of the finished beer.
From those small beginnings, Crafty Devil developed as an independent alternative to the larger breweries traditionally associated with Cardiff. The business built its identity around being proudly local and fiercely independent, with the brewery's connection to the city becoming an important part of how it presented both its beers and itself.
In 2017, the brewery moved into its current home at The Stone Yard on Ninian Park Road in Canton. The larger site gave Crafty Devil a permanent production base and allowed the business to continue expanding beyond its garden-shed origins while remaining firmly rooted in west Cardiff.
Crafty Devil's production today focuses primarily on bottled, canned and keg beer rather than regular cask ale. Its beers are supplied to markets and a variety of local outlets, giving the brewery a strong presence around Cardiff and the surrounding area while maintaining the small independent approach on which the business was founded.
The brewery has also expanded into hospitality, operating two microbars: one in Cardiff and another in Penarth. Together with its production brewery, those venues give Crafty Devil a direct relationship with local drinkers and extend the brewery's presence beyond packaged beer and wholesale supply.
More than a decade after starting in a garden shed, Crafty Devil remains an independent Cardiff brewery shaped by the original idea shared by Adam and Rhys: making fresh, full-flavoured beer they genuinely want to drink, while offering a local alternative to larger-scale brewing.
