Hafod Brewing Company is an independent, family-run brewery in Mold, Flintshire, producing modern Welsh beer inspired by the people, places and ingredients of North East Wales. Founded in 2011, Hafod has grown from a one-barrel workshop brewery into a 17-barrel operation producing a diverse range of balanced, drinkable beers.
Brewery story
Hafod Brewing Company began in 2011 on a much smaller scale, brewing just one barrel at a time from a workshop on Hafod Road. From those modest beginnings, the independent family-run brewery developed around the idea of producing balanced, approachable modern beer while celebrating the landscape, ingredients and lesser-known places of North East Wales.
As the brewery grew, Hafod moved into a much larger home at the Old Gas Works on Gas Lane in Mold. Its new 17-barrel headquarters opened in 2015 and was equipped with bespoke brewing equipment and innovations developed around the needs of the brewery. The move transformed Hafod from its original workshop operation into a considerably larger production brewery while keeping the business firmly rooted in Flintshire.
Hafod produces a varied range of beer, with established releases accompanied by seasonal and special brews throughout the year. Bottle and cask beer have traditionally formed an important part of production, while the brewery continues to develop new recipes and beer styles. Its approach focuses on making beers that are flavourful and balanced but remain highly drinkable.
North East Wales remains central to Hafod's identity. The brewery aims to showcase the region through its beers and increasingly work with outstanding local producers and ingredients, using brewing as a way of drawing attention to some of the area's hidden gems. Beer can also be collected directly from the brewery shop, while occasional open days provide opportunities for visitors to see more of the Mold operation.
Hafod remains very much a family-team operation. Head Brewer Phill leads the creative side of brewing and recipe development, while Derek looks after logistics and the practical running of the brewery. Lynn manages bookkeeping and administration, Martin oversees the wider strategy of the company alongside design work, and Suzanne handles sales, social media and the brewery's events programme.
More than a decade after its first one-barrel brews, Hafod continues to describe its approach as 'deliciously modern Welsh brewing'. Its growth from a small workshop to a purpose-built 17-barrel operation has increased what the brewery can produce without losing the family-run character or its focus on showcasing North East Wales through accessible, carefully made beer.
