Brewery story

About Harviestoun Brewery

Harviestoun began brewing in 1983, starting on a tiny scale with beer made by one brewer using very basic equipment.

Over the following decades the brewery developed from those small beginnings into one of Scotland's long-established independent breweries, building a reputation for both traditional cask beer and more experimental releases.

Today Harviestoun operates from Alva at the foot of the Ochil Hills, where its brewery has grown to a 60-barrel scale while continuing to produce a broad range of beers.

Quality has remained central to Harviestoun's approach. The brewery describes itself as one of the early contributors to the movement towards better and more characterful beer in the UK, predating the more recent craft beer boom by many years.

The brewery produces a varied portfolio including golden ales, pale ales, IPAs and darker beers, alongside frequent rotational releases and five cask ales available throughout the year.

Harviestoun is also known for its barrel-aged beers, particularly Ola Dubh, which is produced in partnership with Highland Park whisky and forms part of a distinctive range of stronger, matured beers.

Local sourcing plays an important role in production. Around 80% of the malt used by the brewery comes from a farm within approximately eight miles of Alva, while spent grain is returned to another local farmer for use as cattle feed.

Scottish water and locally sourced ingredients are combined with hops from around the world, allowing the brewery to balance its local identity with a wider range of modern beer styles.

Harviestoun has built long-standing relationships across hospitality, wholesale and retail, with its beers sold throughout the UK and to an international audience.

The brewery continues to develop new beers while maintaining established favourites, combining decades of brewing experience with an ongoing focus on innovation, consistency and quality.
