Snowdon Craft Beer is an independent brewery based in Deganwy, North Wales, producing a wide range of modern craft beers alongside traditional cask ales. Originally founded as The Great Orme Brewery, the business has evolved while remaining rooted in the landscapes and communities of Eryri (Snowdonia), combining local heritage with contemporary brewing.
Brewery story
Snowdon Craft Beer traces its origins to 2003, when founder Richard Williams left a career in food sector management consulting to pursue his ambition of establishing a brewery in North Wales. After several years of home brewing and experimentation, The Great Orme Brewery was established in 2006 in a converted 700-square-foot building on the family farm.
The brewery quickly gained recognition, with its first beer winning a regional CAMRA award and later achieving national success when its mild was named CAMRA Champion Mild of Britain at the Great British Beer Festival in 2013. During this period the brewery steadily expanded its range while building a reputation for producing high-quality traditional ales.
In 2011 the brewery introduced Snowdon Craft Lager, initially as an experimental brew. Its popularity, alongside changing consumer tastes influenced by the growing craft beer movement, prompted a wider rethink of the business. In 2018 the brewery rebranded from The Great Orme Brewery to Snowdon Craft Beer, reflecting both its expanding portfolio and its ambition to blend modern brewing with a strong North Wales identity.
The brewery continues to evolve, relocating to a larger home in Deganwy with a 10-barrel brewhouse, brewery shop and taproom. Alongside its established range of lagers, pale ales and IPAs, Snowdon Craft Beer has renewed its focus on cask ales while remaining committed to producing beers inspired by the landscapes, mountains and outdoor culture of North Wales.
