Jump Ship is a dedicated alcohol-free Scottish brewery founded by Sonja Mitchell in 2019. Based at its own brewery in Midlothian since 2024, it uses carefully controlled fermentation to produce full-flavoured beers naturally below 0.5% ABV, with a core range complemented by seasonal and special releases.
Brewery story
Jump Ship was launched by Sonja Mitchell in December 2019 after she struggled to find low-alcohol beers that delivered the flavour she enjoyed in Scottish beer. After leaving her previous career, she spent almost a year developing the brewery's first beer, Yardarm, which went on to win Best No and Low Alcohol Lager at the 2021 World Beer Awards.
The brewery grew steadily before moving into its own dedicated brewery at Rosemains Steading in Midlothian at the beginning of 2024. Jump Ship now produces a year-round core range alongside special releases, with beers available in cans and keg. Its brewing team is led by Head Brewer Pete Sharp, supported by brewers Alex Earle and Iain Mooney.
Rather than brewing conventional-strength beer and removing the alcohol afterwards, Jump Ship uses controlled fermentation to create beers naturally below 0.5% ABV. Careful management of the mash, boil, yeast and fermentation develops flavour while limiting alcohol production, before the beer is conditioned in tank and packaged. The brewery also commits at least 10% of its profits to charity and continues to work on reducing its environmental impact.
