Stewart Brewing is an independent family brewery founded by Steve and Jo Stewart in 2004. Based in Loanhead, Midlothian, it produces a broad range of cask and modern beers from its custom-built 50-hectolitre brewhouse, alongside an onsite Beer & Pizza Kitchen, brewery shop, tours and Brew-It-Yourself experiences.
Brewery story
The idea for Stewart Brewing began in 1996 when Steve and Jo Stewart visited Boston and were inspired to one day establish their own craft brewery. They developed their first recipes on a brewing kit installed in their dining room and later a coal shed, before securing premises and assembling a production brewery from repurposed equipment. Their first commercial range of cask beers launched in 2004, initially stocked by six local pubs.
The brewery continued to grow and in 2013 opened a custom-built brewery in Loanhead, close to its original premises. At its heart is a 50-hectolitre brewhouse, later complemented by hop infusion equipment, a centrifuge and, in 2020, a canning line and new warehouse. The brewery now produces a wide range spanning everyday beers, seasonal cask releases and more experimental styles.
Today, Stewart Brewing combines production with a substantial visitor offering at its Loanhead home. Its Beer & Pizza Kitchen serves cask, tank and keg beer, while visitors can also explore the brewery through regular tours and tastings, fill growlers, visit the brewery shop or take part in the Brew-It-Yourself experience.
Brewery run club
Stewart Brewing Run Club is a friendly social running group based at the brewery in Edinburgh. The club heads out on approximately 5K runs using a rotating selection of local roads, paths and trails, before returning to the brewery for pizza, drinks and socialising.
Social runs of around 5K start and finish at Stewart Brewing, following a variety of routes around the local area. The club has a supportive, no-drop approach where nobody is left behind, with runs aimed at people comfortable covering 5K at a conversational pace.
