Seventy One Brewing

71 Brewing began brewing in Dundee in 2016, producing its inaugural batch at the Old Foundry Building on Blackness Road and becoming the city's first active brewery in more than 50 years. The independent brewery set out to revive Dundee's brewing tradition while taking inspiration from new-wave brewing techniques, traditional European styles and high-quality ingredients.

The brewery occupies a remarkable former ironworks in an area historically known as 'Hell's Half Acre'. Spread across three floors and around 27,000 square feet, the building once formed part of the vast Blackness Ironworks. Where molten iron was once transformed into machinery, 71 now describes its home as a 'flavour foundry', combining the creativity of brewing with the industrial heritage of its surroundings.

Since its early days, 71 Brewing has grown considerably, producing everything from crisp lagers to experimental small-batch releases. The brewery has also invested in reducing the environmental impact of that growth. Since 2023 it has captured carbon dioxide naturally produced during fermentation for reuse within the brewery, while a waste-heat recovery system captures heat from brewing and cooling equipment to provide heating and hot water across the site.

The brewery's Dundee home is also a place for people to experience its beers at source. CANVAS, 71's taproom and events space on Ure Street, combines fresh beer with exhibitions, events, gatherings and private hires, continuing the brewery's philosophy of bringing creativity, industry and community together.
