Independent Lincolnshire brewery established in 2010 by Tony Pygott beside Heckington Windmill, Britain's only eight-sailed windmill. Producing traditional cask and bottle-conditioned ales on a six-barrel brewhouse, 8 Sail offers everything from dark milds and pale ales to IPAs, porters and seasonal beers. Its Victorian-style brewery taproom, shop and large beer garden have become a popular local gathering place.
Brewery story
8 Sail Brewery was founded in 2010 by Tony Pygott, a former teacher with a passion for real ale and local history. Situated beside Heckington Windmill near Sleaford in Lincolnshire, the brewery takes its name from the remarkable eight-sailed windmill that towers above it, the only surviving example of its kind in Britain. Tony recognised the potential of a derelict building at the historic site and set about transforming it into a working microbrewery. The project helped bring a new brewing tradition to Heckington while respecting the architectural heritage of its unusual surroundings.
From the beginning, 8 Sail focused on producing traditional beers suited to modern tastes. Its six-barrel brewing system produces a diverse range of cask and bottle-conditioned ales, including dark milds, golden and hoppy pale ales, IPAs, porters, lagers and seasonal specials. The neighbouring windmill even contributes to the brewing process by helping to mill malted grain. Over the years, the brewery has earned numerous awards for its beers, building a reputation for quality and craftsmanship while remaining firmly connected to its Lincolnshire roots.
The brewery has grown into a small but dedicated team. Tony was joined in 2022 by Head Brewer Paddy, who relocated his family from Holland to pursue his passion for brewing in Lincolnshire. Alongside Assistant Brewer Dominic, the brewing team produces more than 3,600 litres of beer each week. Delivery Driver Dave distributes the beers across the county, while Callum oversees sales and operations. Bar staff Ian and Michaela help run the busy brewery tap, ensuring visitors can enjoy the beers in the welcoming surroundings of their birthplace.
Today, 8 Sail Brewery is as much a community gathering place as a working brewery. Its sympathetically restored Victorian-style taproom serves freshly brewed ales directly from the source, while a spacious dog-friendly beer garden provides seating for around 150 visitors. The brewery hosts three beer festivals annually, alongside regular events celebrating local food producers, musicians and community organisations, including the Singing Windmill Steampunk Society. With its onsite shop selling bottle-conditioned beers, gift packs and takeaway beer, 8 Sail continues to combine traditional brewing, local heritage and a lively community spirit beneath the sails of Heckington Windmill.
