Brewery story
Bad Knees Brewing grew from years of homebrewing experimentation in sheds and garages, where its founders developed recipes, refined techniques and discovered the satisfaction of producing beer by hand. What began as a weekend hobby gradually evolved into a small independent brewing project based near Wantage in Oxfordshire. Founder and brewer Jack leads the operation, supported by Amber and Manu, who contribute to the business through baking, finance, brewing, marketing and community engagement. Rather than pursuing large-scale production, Bad Knees has remained deliberately small, concentrating on making honest, carefully crafted beers that reflect the enthusiasm and personal commitment of the people behind them.
The brewery takes its name and much of its identity from the Ridgeway, the ancient trail that passes through the surrounding countryside. Its rolling hills, historic pathways and expansive views provide inspiration for a business built around perseverance, exploration and the enjoyment of simple experiences. The name Bad Knees is a light-hearted reference to the physical effort involved in walking the trail and the rewards that come from continuing the journey. This connection to the landscape influences the brewery's emphasis on local community, outdoor experiences and bringing people together over good beer, whether they are regular visitors to the area or walkers discovering the Ridgeway for the first time.
Bad Knees describes itself as a picobrewery, operating on a very small scale from the owner's home. Beers are typically brewed in batches of approximately five to six gallons, with production generally concentrated during the summer months. Its ales are unpasteurised and unfiltered, reflecting a preference for straightforward, minimally processed brewing. The brewery serves its beers in cask and keg, maintaining a close connection between production and the people who drink them. Ingredients are sourced locally wherever possible, while each batch is produced with care and attention to flavour. The small brewing volumes allow the team to remain hands-on throughout the process and retain the character of a genuine homegrown brewing venture.
A distinctive feature of Bad Knees is its pop-up Tap Yard, a rustic wooden barn-style garage opening onto a track along the Ridgeway. Rather than operating as a conventional pub or commercial taproom, the space hosts occasional events where visitors can enjoy freshly brewed beers in an informal outdoor setting. Seating is intentionally simple, with straw bales and garden furniture, and visitors are encouraged to walk or cycle to the venue where possible. Dogs and children are welcome, and the brewery also offers soft drinks, snacks and takeaway beer. The Tap Yard reflects the brewery's wider philosophy: creating a welcoming place where local residents, outdoor enthusiasts and beer lovers can share good company, enjoy the surrounding countryside and appreciate carefully made independent beer.
