Brewery story
Dartmoor Brewery was established in Princetown in 1994, initially brewing from the back of the Prince of Wales pub. At 1,465 feet above sea level, it describes itself as England's highest brewery, with its identity closely tied to the wild landscape of Dartmoor and the community around it.
Growing demand led to a major move in 2005, when production transferred to a purpose-built brewery on Station Road. A new 30-barrel brewhouse provided considerably more capacity, which has been expanded over the years as the brewery's ales have reached pubs across the South West and further afield.
Jail Ale, named after nearby Dartmoor Prison, has become the brewery's flagship, alongside longstanding beers such as Dartmoor IPA and Legend. Brewing remains rooted in traditional and natural methods, using English malts, selected hops, pure Dartmoor water and the brewery's own house yeast, with modern touches introduced where they complement that approach.
More than three decades after its beginnings behind a Princetown pub, Dartmoor remains proudly independent and locally owned. The brewery shares ownership with the Two Bridges Hotel on Dartmoor and The Bedford Hotel in Tavistock, forming part of a group of Devon businesses with a strong connection to the surrounding area.
