Powderkeg Beer is an independent, family-run brewery in the Devon countryside, founded in 2014 by John and Jess Magill. Its flavour-led beers draw on styles and ingredients from around the world, combining a 20-barrel production brewery with a small pilot system for experimentation.
Brewery story
Powderkeg was founded by John and Jess Magill in Devon in 2014. John had decided to become a professional brewer in 2006, putting his microbiology background to use and spending six years learning the trade before the pair developed plans for a modern Devon brewery of their own.
From its beginnings as a small-batch operation, Powderkeg has developed into a 20-barrel brewery with around 35,000 litres of fermentation capacity and its own can, keg and cask packaging. A separate 100-litre pilot system gives the brewing team space for research, recipe development and more experimental small-batch beers.
Powderkeg describes itself as completely independent and brewer-owned, with curiosity and creativity shaping its approach to beer. Its range draws inspiration from international beer styles and ingredients while continuing to evolve through new recipes, collaborations and experimentation.
The brewery remains a family business led by John and Jess and operates from Woodbury Salterton in the Devon countryside. Alongside its focus on flavour and experimentation, Powderkeg places an emphasis on operating sustainably and ethically, bringing those principles together under its idea of 'Free-Thinking Beer'.
