Brewery story
Bays Brewery was founded in 2007 by brothers Mark and Peter Salmon and their brother-in-law Will Freeland, who shared a vision of creating exceptional beers inspired by their hometown of Torbay. Based in Paignton on Devon's English Riviera, the family-run brewery was established with a determination to produce distinctive, high-quality ales that local people could be proud of. Will brought considerable brewing experience to the venture, having previously spent more than a decade as Head Brewer at Skinner's Brewery in Cornwall. Combining his brewing expertise with Mark's business experience and Peter's marketing background, the founders set out to establish what they hoped would become Devon's beer of choice.
From its beginnings, Bays Brewery has developed a reputation for producing award-winning beers that celebrate the character of South Devon. Its brewing philosophy combines quality ingredients, technical expertise and a passion for creating consistently enjoyable beer. The brewery has grown from its original family venture into an established regional business, supplying customers across the South West and beyond. Despite this development, Bays has maintained its close connection with Torbay, drawing inspiration from its coastal surroundings and supporting the pubs, businesses and communities that have helped shape its success.
Community involvement and environmental responsibility are important parts of the brewery's identity. Bays regularly operates pop-up bars at local events, helping bring its beers directly to people across the region. It also produces special charity beers that raise funds for community initiatives and local causes. Sustainability is another priority, with rooftop solar panels helping power the brewery's operations and spent brewing grain collected by a nearby farmer for use as cattle feed. These initiatives reflect the brewery's ambition to operate responsibly while supporting the people, businesses and environment of its Devon home.
Today, Bays Brewery remains a family-run business with an experienced team working across brewing, sales, marketing, events and distribution. Co-founder Will Freeland continues to lead production as Head Brewer, while Mark Salmon oversees the company's development and Peter Salmon directs sales and marketing. The brewing team includes Colin Pottinger, Simon Whitehead-Coyle and Toby Green, helping maintain the quality and consistency of its beers. With nearly two decades of brewing behind it, Bays continues to champion Torbay through its award-winning beers, local partnerships and commitment to producing Devon's beer of choice.
