Organic farmhouse brewery in the East Neuk of Fife producing naturally fermented beers inspired by Northern European brewing traditions and the surrounding Scottish coastline.
Brewery story
Futtle was founded in 2019 by partners Lucy and Stephen at Bowhouse, near the coastal village of St Monans in the East Neuk of Fife.
Inspired by the farmhouse brewing traditions of Northern Europe and their coastal surroundings, they set out to make rustic, natural beers that reflect the landscape and changing seasons.
Every Futtle beer is fully organic, brewed with whole grains, whole-leaf hops and water from a borehole behind the brewery. Seasonal releases also use plants, roots, seeds and seaweeds foraged from nearby beaches and hedgerows.
The brewery takes a deliberately slow approach, using malted and unmalted grains, raw brewing techniques, natural clarification and extended conditioning. Some beers spend months in wooden barrels with fruit, fresh hops, cider lees or grape pomace.
In 2022 Futtle installed a coolship and began producing fully organic, spontaneously fermented beers, building a barrel stock intended to capture an even stronger expression of its location.
Today the brewery is joined by a taproom serving Futtle beer alongside natural wine, cider, house spirits and fermented soft drinks, with a record shop overlooking the brewery.
