Brewery story

About Hawkstone

Hawkstone is an independent Cotswold brewery based at College Farm near Bourton-on-the-Water. Its roots go back to 2005, when Master Brewer Rick Keene founded Cotswold Brewing Company with a focus on traditionally made lager.

Hawkstone grew from a collaboration between Rick Keene and Jeremy Clarkson, using spring barley grown at Clarkson's nearby Diddly Squat Farm. The partnership brought together Clarkson's farming and Keene's brewing experience, with the Hawkstone name inspired by the ancient Hawk Stone located near the farm.

Lager remains at the heart of Hawkstone. The brewery uses quality malted barley and an extended lagering process, allowing its beers more time to mature and develop the smooth, rounded character that defines the range. Alongside lager, Hawkstone now produces ales and cider made using freshly pressed British apples.

Hawkstone has grown rapidly from its Gloucestershire base into a nationally recognised beer and cider brand, helped by its close association with Jeremy Clarkson and Clarkson's Farm. Despite that growth, brewing remains at College Farm under Rick Keene and his team, with an emphasis on British-grown ingredients and supporting British agriculture.

Visitors can experience the brewery at The Hawkstone Arms, its on-site bar serving Hawkstone beer and cider alongside regular independent food traders. Guided brewery tours also take visitors through the brewhouse and explore Hawkstone's history, ingredients and brewing process, accompanied by tastings.
