Independent Cambridgeshire brewery founded in 2014 in a garage in Papworth Everard. Now based in Earith, Papworth produces award-winning traditional and modern ales alongside its Culture Shock lager, with a focus on drinkability, quality and its award-winning Crystal Ship taproom.
Brewery story
Papworth Brewery began in 2014 in a garage in Papworth Everard, founded by a beer-loving scientist who decided to leave behind a successful 25-year career in pursuit of something more satisfying. The brewery took its name from the village where it started and adopted a straightforward philosophy: 'It's All About The Beer', with the ambition of producing deliciously drinkable ales.
As demand grew, the garage brewery could no longer keep pace. In 2017 Papworth moved to larger premises in Earith, on the edge of the Cambridgeshire Fens, and invested in an 11-barrel brewing plant. The move significantly increased production capacity while allowing the small team to expand its range of traditional and modern beers.
In 2020 the brewery opened The Crystal Ship, a dedicated taproom and bottle shop on the same industrial estate. Named separately from the brewery, it became a showcase for Papworth's beers, including its Culture Shock lager, alongside freshly prepared pizzas and a wider drinks selection. The venue has since earned recognition in the Good Pub Guide and awards from local CAMRA.
Despite growing from a garage operation into an established brewery with its own award-winning taproom, Papworth remains a small, independent business built around a passion for beer. Its guiding principle has stayed unchanged since 2014: concentrate on brewing great beer that people genuinely enjoy drinking.
