Independent Cornish brewery founded in 1997, renowned for modern cask ales including the iconic Betty Stogs and Cornish Knocker. Following its revival in 2023, Skinner's continues to brew traditional Cornish beers with a focus on quality, character and independent family ownership.
Brewery story
Skinner's Brewery was founded in 1997 by Steve Skinner, who moved from Jersey to Cornwall with his young family in search of better surf, a strong community and the opportunity to build an independent brewery inspired by modern British beer.
From the outset, Skinner's set out to do things differently. Launching with beers including Betty Stogs and Cornish Knocker, the brewery helped redefine Cornish cask ale with lighter colours, bolder hop character and a distinctive sense of humour that quickly became part of the brand's identity.
As demand grew, changes to Small Breweries' Relief in 2002 allowed the brewery to expand into a larger site at Indian Queens, investing in improved brewing equipment and increasing production while earning a reputation for premium cask ales throughout Cornwall and across the UK.
Like many breweries, Skinner's faced significant challenges during the Covid-19 pandemic, ultimately entering administration in 2022 after more than two decades of brewing.
In 2023 the brewery was revived by the owners of Goodh Brewing Co., ensuring the iconic Skinner's name remained in Cornish hands. Today it continues as an independent family-owned brewery, producing the classic beers that made it famous while looking towards a new chapter in its history.
