Independent Castle Douglas brewery established in 1995, producing traditionally brewed real ales with an emphasis on natural flavour and serving visitors from its licensed brewery tap.
Brewery story
Sulwath Brewers began brewing in Castle Douglas in 1995, producing traditional real ales with an emphasis on natural flavour and brewing without concentrates, colourings or extracts.
The brewery takes its name from 'Sulwath', an ancient name for the Solway Estuary. Its identity also draws on the surrounding landscape, with the brewery logo depicting geese flying against Criffel, a prominent local hill.
Over the following decades Sulwath built a regional and national following, supplying its award-winning beers to pubs and wholesalers while welcoming visitors to its licensed brewery tap in Castle Douglas.
In 2025 a serious fire caused significant damage to the brewhouse and temporarily halted brewing. Sulwath has remained open to the public while rebuilding and working towards restoring production.
