Glasgow brewery combining Scottish brewing with Bavarian tradition. WEST specialises in German-style lagers and wheat beers brewed in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot, the German Purity Law of 1516.
Brewery story
WEST was founded by Bavarian-born Petra Wetzel, who first came to Scotland on a school exchange before returning in 1994 to study at the University of Glasgow.
The idea grew from a visit by Petra's father, who struggled to find the kind of beer he enjoyed in Bavaria. Petra set out to create a Glasgow brewery producing German-style beer using traditional brewing principles.
WEST opened in 2006 in the historic Templeton Building beside Glasgow Green, combining its brewery with a German-inspired beer hall, restaurant and beer garden.
The brewery produces its lagers and wheat beers in accordance with the Reinheitsgebot, using only water, malt, hops and yeast, combining German brewing traditions with its Glasgow identity.
WEST has since grown from a self-contained brewery and beer hall into a wider distribution operation, while WEST on the Green remains the brewery's home and visitor destination.
