Brewery story
Burnside Brewery was established in 2010 by Gary and Dave Metcalfe in Laurencekirk, Aberdeenshire, between the Cairngorm mountains and Scotland's North Sea coastline. Beginning with a modest 2.5-barrel brewing plant, the brewery developed a range of traditional ales inspired by the surrounding countryside. Growing demand led to an expansion to a 10-barrel brewhouse in 2012, establishing Burnside as a local producer of carefully crafted Scottish beer.
A new chapter began in 2018 when the brewery passed into new ownership, with Steve Lewis and Margo Macnab helping to broaden its ambitions. Originally from St Louis, Missouri, Steve had moved to Scotland as an engineer before discovering a passion for brewing. Together with Margo and their brewing team, Burnside expanded its range while maintaining a commitment to Scottish ingredients, balanced flavours and traditional brewing techniques. All its beers are naturally clarified without finings, making them suitable for vegans.
Burnside has become particularly recognised for its award-winning alcohol-free beers. Inspired by the arrival of their son, Steve and Margo wanted to create beers that delivered the same authentic drinking experience without the alcohol. Using premium ingredients and natural brewing methods, the team developed alcohol-free IPAs and lagers that became some of the brewery's bestselling products, reaching customers as far away as Canada. Alongside these releases, Burnside continues to produce cask ales, bottled beers and experimental collaborations, including barrel-aged beers matured in casks from nearby Fettercairn Distillery.
The brewery entered another period of growth with construction of larger premises near Laurencekirk beginning in 2024 and the first brew taking place towards the end of 2025. With expanded production capabilities, a brewery shop and scheduled brewer experiences, Burnside continues to build on its local roots while reaching a wider audience. Its focus on Scottish ingredients, independent brewing and innovative alcohol-free beer reflects a commitment to supporting Scotland from the ground up.
