London brewery founded in 2010 by Jasper Cuppaidge, best known for its flagship Hells Lager and fresh, modern brewing approach. Originating beneath the railway arches of Kentish Town, Camden expanded to a major production brewery in Enfield in 2017. Now owned by AB InBev, it continues to operate its original Camden Beer Hall and brewery tours.
Brewery story
Camden Town Brewery's story began with a missed flight. Australian Jasper Cuppaidge found himself working in London pubs before opening The Horseshoe in Hampstead in 2006. Inspired by his grandfather Laurie McLaughlin, who had owned a brewery in Australia, Jasper brewed his first cask ale in 2007 as a birthday present for his mother. Named Mac's, the beer proved popular enough to become a regular fixture at The Horseshoe and eventually found its way into other London pubs.
Determined to produce the crisp, refreshing lagers he loved, Jasper searched for a larger brewing space and discovered a collection of Victorian railway arches beneath Kentish Town West station. Camden Town Brewery officially began brewing there in spring 2010, and that autumn released its defining beer, Hells Lager. Combining elements of German Helles and Pilsner brewing traditions, Hells helped establish Camden's reputation for fresh, accessible and carefully crafted lager.
Camden grew rapidly from its railway-arch beginnings, becoming one of London's most recognisable modern beer brands. Following its acquisition by AB InBev in 2015, the brewery expanded its production capabilities, opening a much larger facility in Ponders End, Enfield, in 2017. The new site became its main production brewery, while the original Kentish Town arches remained an important part of Camden's identity.
Today, Camden Town Brewery continues to champion fresh beer through its core lagers, seasonal releases and experimental brews. Its original railway arches are home to Camden Beer Hall, where visitors can enjoy beers close to their birthplace, explore the brewery on guided tours and discover special releases. From a small Hampstead pub to a nationally recognised brewing name, Camden's journey has been driven by a simple ambition: making clean, crisp beer that people genuinely enjoy drinking.
