Carlisle Brewing Company is a family-run Cumbrian brewery established in 2013 by the publicans behind The Spinners Arms in Cummersdale. Producing traditional British-style ales, it grew from a small brewery behind the pub into a larger production brewery in Carlisle, while The Spinners Arms remains its brewery tap.
Brewery story
Carlisle Brewing Company grew out of The Spinners Arms in Cummersdale, which the family took over in 2007. After years as publicans and real ale enthusiasts, they began brewing for themselves in 2013, installing a 2.5-barrel microbrewery at the pub and focusing on traditional British-style ales.
The original brewery was quickly outgrown and in October 2015 production moved to larger premises on Kingstown Industrial Estate in Carlisle, where a 10-barrel plant significantly increased capacity. The move helped re-establish commercial brewing in Carlisle after an absence of around 25 years, while maintaining the brewery's emphasis on carefully produced, flavour-led real ale.
The family continues to operate The Spinners Arms alongside the brewery. The Grade II listed pub remains Carlisle Brewing Company's brewery tap, keeping a selection of its beers on the bar and providing a direct connection between the brewery, its customers and the traditional pub culture from which the business developed.
