Gan Yam is an independent brewery founded by a group of friends from Kendal, initially brewing commercially in North London before returning home to Cumbria. Based on Shap Road in Kendal since 2021, the brewery produces modern beer while using its space for events, clubs and community activities.
Brewery story
Gan Yam's story began in 2015 when seven childhood friends from Kendal found themselves living in London and started homebrewing as a way to spend time together. The project developed into a commercial home-based brewery in North London in 2018, taking its name from the Cumbrian dialect phrase 'Gan Yam', meaning 'Going Home'.
The name became reality in 2021 when the brewery returned to Kendal and built its first brewhouse in the town. Since then, the team has continued developing its beers while making the brewery itself a space for bringing people together, with an emphasis on experimentation, learning and creating connections through beer.
Today, Gan Yam operates from Shap Road Industrial Estate in Kendal. Alongside brewing, the team uses the brewery for activities including its Hike Club, Home Brew Club, annual charity beer festival, gigs and other events, with taproom openings held during the year and cans available to collect directly from the brewery.

Gan Yam's Kendal brewery hosts taproom openings and other events throughout the year. Regular activities around the brewery include gigs, its annual charity beer festival, homebrew events and community gatherings, while cans can also be collected directly from the brewery during the week.
