Brewery story
Godalming Beerworks is an independent nanobrewery based at The Star Inn in the heart of Godalming, Surrey. The brewery was created by local brewers Andy and Phil, who share a passion for traditional beer and the town's brewing heritage. Godalming has a long association with brewing, including a record of a brewer named John George producing 'byere' in 1483. Despite this history, the town had been without a brewery since 1887, inspiring the pair to bring small-scale beer production back to Godalming.
Andy has spent much of his working life running pubs in and around Godalming, becoming landlord of The Star Inn in 2016. The pub has built a reputation for serving quality real ale in excellent condition, alongside its CAMRA-recognised cider offering. For Andy, establishing a brewery was a natural extension of this commitment, providing greater involvement in the production of the beer served to customers. His fellow brewer Phil began homebrewing in his early twenties and spent years developing and refining recipes before bringing them to a wider audience.
The brewery operates on a small scale within The Star Inn, combining the character of a traditional pub with hands-on brewing. Its beers take inspiration from Godalming's notable people, places and historical events, giving each recipe a connection to the town. The close relationship between brewery and pub allows the brewers to share their passion directly with customers, while offering opportunities to learn more about the brewing process.
Godalming Beerworks represents a revival of the town's brewing traditions, bringing beer production back to a community with centuries of brewing history. Through its small-batch approach, locally inspired recipes and connection to The Star Inn, the brewery celebrates both the craft of brewing and the character of Godalming. Andy and Phil continue to draw on their experience and enthusiasm to produce beers that reflect the town they call home.
