Hydes Brewery is an independent family brewer and pub company founded in Manchester in 1863. Now based at The Beer Studio in MediaCity, Salford, Hydes produces traditional cask ales alongside modern keg beers and lager using a state-of-the-art brewery. Its core range is supplemented by seasonal releases, while more than 160 years of brewing heritage remains closely tied to its collection of pubs across the North West.
Brewery story
Hydes Brewery was founded in Manchester in 1863 and has remained part of the city's brewing and hospitality landscape for more than 160 years. Over successive generations, the family business has developed from a traditional local brewery into a brewer and pub retailer with a substantial presence across the North West.
For much of its history, Hydes brewed at the Queen's Brewery in Hulme. In 2012 the company left its historic Manchester home and moved brewing operations to a new, smaller and more modern facility at Kansas Avenue in Salford's MediaCity, known as The Beer Studio.
The modern brewery was designed to combine Hydes' traditional brewing heritage with contemporary production technology. Its team includes experienced brewers across a range of disciplines, with the brewery producing cask and keg beers spanning a broad selection of styles and flavours.
Hydes maintains a core range of beers throughout the year while regularly introducing seasonal cask releases. The Ralf + Alf range provides a platform for changing seasonal beers, while the brewery's kegging operation also produces beers including Dock 4 lager, named in reference to the historic Manchester Ship Canal docks.
Although rooted in traditional British brewing, Hydes continues to experiment with new ingredients and techniques. The brewery works largely with quality UK suppliers while exploring modern hop products and yeast strains, alongside occasionally revisiting historic ingredients and varieties used in brewing more than a century ago.
Sustainability has also become an important part of the modern brewery. Hydes says more than a third of its energy is sourced from solar panels, while its brewing plant was designed to reduce energy consumption throughout production. The company also participates in wider brewing-industry initiatives focused on reducing environmental impact.
Today, Hydes combines its Salford brewing operation with a collection of individual pubs across the region. The business remains focused on brewing, pub hospitality and maintaining the connection between its beers and the communities it has served since the nineteenth century.
