Mauldons Brewery

Mauldons traces its brewing heritage to 1795, when beer was brewed at the Bull Hotel in Sudbury. As the business prospered it moved to larger premises in Ballingdon Street and developed a long association with brewing and pubs in the town before the original operation eventually ceased following its acquisition by Greene King in the 1960s.

The Mauldon family brewing tradition was revived by Peter Mauldon, who had previously risen to Head Brewer at Watneys' Mortlake Brewery. He re-established brewing in Sudbury in the early 1980s, with new premises acquired on the Chilton Industrial Estate in 1982. Long-serving brewer Steve Birch has been part of Mauldons since this period and remains closely associated with its traditional ales.

Peter and Jane Mauldon retired in 2000, when Steve and Alison Sims took over the brewery, before another change of ownership in 2019 brought Mauldons into the family-owned Nedging Hall Estate under Charlie Buckle. The brewery continues to focus on traditional beer, using UK-grown hops and barley, with a core range complemented by seasonal small-batch brews.

Today Mauldons operates from Church Field Road in Sudbury, where expansion has included a purpose-built cold store and bottle shop. Its connection with local pub culture continues through The Brewery Tap on East Street, which serves Mauldons beers alongside around 200 guest ales each year and hosts a regular programme of community events.
