Adnams is an independent brewery founded in Southwold, Suffolk, in 1872. Brewing on one of England's oldest brewing sites, with records dating back to 1345, Adnams combines more than 150 years of brewing heritage with innovation, sustainability and a commitment to producing award-winning beers using locally sourced ingredients.
Brewery story
Adnams was founded in Southwold, Suffolk, in 1872, although brewing has taken place on the same site for far longer. Historical records show beer was being brewed there as early as 1345, giving the brewery one of the oldest continuously used brewing locations in England. Today, Adnams remains proudly independent, with Southwold continuing to be at the heart of everything it produces.
From its coastal home overlooking the North Sea, Adnams has grown into one of Britain's best-known family-owned brewing businesses. Alongside its award-winning beers, the company produces premium spirits, sources wines from around the world, and operates a collection of hotels, inns, pubs and retail stores across East Anglia, all centred around delivering exceptional products and memorable customer experiences.
Innovation has been a defining characteristic throughout Adnams' history. While respecting traditional brewing methods, the brewery continually develops new recipes, refines its brewing processes and invests in modern equipment. Brewing remains firmly rooted in Southwold, with locally sourced ingredients helping shape the distinctive character of its beers.
Sustainability sits at the heart of the business. Adnams has developed an award-winning environmental framework focused on reducing energy consumption, responsible sourcing, waste reduction and supporting local communities. The brewery believes long-term success comes from balancing innovation with care for the Suffolk coastline and the environment that surrounds it.
The brewery has earned widespread recognition for the quality of its products and hospitality. Head Brewer Dan Gooderham was named Brewer of the Year at the 2026 Brewer's Choice Awards, while Adnams has also been recognised as East Anglia's leading independent wine merchant. Its hospitality business continues to receive national acclaim, including Michelin Key recognition for The Swan Hotel in Southwold.
More than 150 years after its founding—and almost seven centuries since brewing first took place on the site—Adnams continues to evolve while remaining true to its Southwold roots, combining heritage, innovation and sustainability to produce beers enjoyed across the UK and beyond.
