Brewery story
Artefact Brewing was established in 2020 by husband-and-wife team James Phillips and Kat Lawson-Phillips in the Suffolk village of Ixworth, near Bury St Edmunds. What began as James's enthusiasm for homebrewing gradually developed into something much more ambitious. Encouraged by Kat, he moved his brewing equipment out of their kitchen and into a shipping container on her family's farm. Following an extensive DIY conversion in 2019, the container became a working nanobrewery, allowing the couple to explore whether their passion for beer could become a viable business.
Operating from its unusual home at Bridge Farm, Artefact focuses on producing carefully crafted beers in small batches. The brewery aims to maintain a core range of seven beers throughout the year, including favourites such as Ixworth Blonde and Dark Mild, while regularly introducing seasonal and limited-edition creations. Releases such as Jasmine Blonde and Heritage Ruby Ale reflect its willingness to experiment with ingredients and styles. From traditional British ales to more contemporary craft beers, Artefact takes pride in offering a varied and constantly evolving selection.
Experimentation and collaboration have become central to Artefact's identity. The brewery has produced more than 50 different beers, working with partners and participating in events that introduce its creations to new audiences. Its commitment to quality has also attracted industry recognition, with multiple awards celebrating the beers produced from its compact brewing operation. Local hospitality businesses, including the Leaping Hare, Ickworth Hotel, Folk Cafe and Roots Cafe, have stocked Artefact's bottled beers, helping establish the brewery within Suffolk's independent food and drink community.
Despite its growing reputation, Artefact remains a small, hands-on operation driven by the enthusiasm of its founders. James and Kat continue to brew from their original converted shipping container while exploring opportunities to expand production and supply more pubs and restaurants. They also hope to develop what they can offer visitors at the farm. Through collaborations, local events and a steady stream of new releases, Artefact continues to demonstrate how creativity, determination and a passion for good beer can transform a homebrewing hobby into an award-winning independent brewery.
