Brewery story
Fresh Standard was founded in 2020 by experienced brewer Richard Taylor in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire. Initially operating from space rented from Artisan Ales, the brewery began with two core beers alongside experimental and one-off releases. Richard's approach was built around traditional brewing principles, using just four ingredients: water, malt, hops and yeast. By avoiding finings, every Fresh Standard beer is vegan-friendly, reflecting the brewery's belief that quality beer can be produced without unnecessary additions.
In 2022, Fresh Standard relocated to its own premises at Merretts Mill Industrial Estate, allowing the business to establish a dedicated brewery and public taproom. Richard's wife Charlotte joined the team during this period, helping develop the brewery's community-focused identity. The move created a space where customers could enjoy beer directly from the producer, while online sales made the brewery's range available beyond its immediate surroundings.
The brewery's philosophy centres on simplicity, quality and carefully crafted beer. Rather than relying on elaborate ingredients or unnecessary processing, Fresh Standard focuses on traditional methods and the character of its four core brewing ingredients. Its taproom has developed into a lively local venue, hosting rotating street-food traders, Sunday roasts, live music, quizzes, workshops and seasonal celebrations. Dog-friendly and accessible from the Nailsworth-to-Stroud cycle path, it attracts local residents, walkers, cyclists and visitors to the area.
In 2026, Fresh Standard expanded into an adjacent industrial unit, creating a larger dedicated taproom with a wood-burning stove for colder months. The additional space has supported a growing programme of community events, from creative workshops and charity quizzes to food pop-ups and seasonal markets. Despite its growth, the brewery remains committed to the principles established by Richard in 2020: producing fresh, uncomplicated, vegan-friendly beer and providing a welcoming place for people to enjoy it together.
