Ulverston Brewing Company is a Cumbrian brewery founded by Anita and Paul in 2006. Now based in the restored Victorian livestock market in Ulverston, it produces a range of real ales including beers inspired by Laurel and Hardy, reflecting Stan Laurel's connection with the town.
Brewery story
Ulverston Brewing Company grew from Anita and Paul's ambition to bring brewing back to their home town after the closure of Hartleys. What began with beer brewed in their garage developed into a full-time business, with Anita and Paul undertaking brewing training before establishing the company in 2006 at the former Diamond Pit in nearby Lindal.
The brewery later moved into historic buildings in Ulverston that were originally constructed in 1875 as a purpose-built indoor cattle market. After around 85 years serving local farmers, the site became home to Cumbria Crystal before falling vacant in 1999. Anita and Paul spent several years planning and working to restore the derelict buildings as a new home for the brewery.
Today, brewing takes place in the distinctive former livestock market on Lightburn Road. Ulverston's identity remains central to the brewery, from its use of the town crest and 'Only the best' motto to beers inspired by Stan Laurel, who was born in the town. A small bar overlooking the brewing plant also opens by arrangement and during selected local festivals.
