Independent city-centre microbrewery and taproom established in Carlisle in 2024, brewing and serving its beer in the same space just a few feet from the tanks.
Brewery story
West Walls was founded by lifelong friends Joe and Fergus, who wanted to bring the brewery taproom culture they had experienced in cities including Edinburgh, Newcastle, Manchester and Glasgow to their home city of Carlisle.
Both learned to brew at Borderlands Brewery, founded by Fergus's father Stuart in 2019. Fergus wanted to build a brewery while Joe brought a background in hospitality, leading them to create a business where the taproom would sit at the heart of the brewery.
They took over the former Twisted Wheel nightclub in 2023, a building that had stood unused for seventeen years. After around nine months of largely hands-on renovation, West Walls opened in June 2024 as Cumbria's first city-centre microbrewery taproom.
Beer is brewed onsite on a manual 1,000-litre brewhouse, with malt from Crisp Maltings and British, American and New Zealand hops supplied through Charles Faram. A core range is complemented by regularly changing one-off batches.
West Walls has since taken on the neighbouring unit, with plans to expand its brewing and taproom operation and create a flexible events and live music space.

Brewery run club
West Walls Run Club is West Walls Brewing Co.’s monthly social running club, bringing runners together for an inclusive Sunday run followed by drinks at the brewery taproom. With different pace groups and a beginner-friendly run-walk option, the club is designed to welcome a wide range of abilities.
Runs take place on the second Sunday of every month at 11am, starting and finishing at West Walls Brewing Co. The club offers a 5k social run with 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 min/mile pace groups, plus a beginner-friendly 3k run-walk group. Bags and coats can be left at the brewery, with everyone returning to the taproom afterwards for social drinks and 20% off for the first hour.

Taproom
