Brewery story

About AlgeBrew

AlgeBrew Brewery was born from the shared interests of friends Edd and Matt, combining a love of craft beer with their backgrounds in mathematics. Their brewing journey began with small stovetop homebrew kits, where the precision and scientific nature of brewing proved a natural fit for their mathematical minds. As their interest grew, increasingly capable equipment followed, including a Grainfather G30 after Edd moved to Petersfield.

After brewing more than 100 different beers, Edd and Matt took the step from homebrewing into commercial production. Based in Petersfield, Hampshire, AlgeBrew operates a fully licensed small-batch brewery built around a 150-litre Elite Stainless brewing system, supported by 150-litre and 300-litre fermenters alongside a small 30-litre experimental vessel.

AlgeBrew focuses on modern, drinkable beers while giving both brewers room to explore their individual tastes. Edd gravitates towards expressive hazy and malt-forward styles with depth and balance, while Matt favours assertive bitterness and clean finishes. The brewery's core direction includes hazy IPAs, crisp and bitter West Coast beers and traditional cask ales given a contemporary twist.

Experimentation and seasonality are also central to AlgeBrew's approach, with plans for one-off beers ranging from fruited sours in spring and crisp lagers during summer to Red IPAs in autumn and heavily roasted Imperial Stouts through winter. Cask beer remains particularly important to both founders, with quality and flavour intended to remain at the heart of the brewery as it develops.
