Brewery story
Barsham Brewery is an independent brewery situated on the historic Barsham Estate in rural North Norfolk, near the market town of Fakenham. Surrounded by rolling fields and the distinctive landscape of the Norfolk countryside, the brewery has developed a strong connection between farming and beer production. The estate has grown high-quality malting barley for generations, providing the foundation for a genuinely local approach to brewing. The brewery came under its present ownership in 2017, building on this agricultural heritage to produce beers that reflect the character of their surroundings.
At the heart of Barsham Brewery is its field-to-glass philosophy. Maris Otter barley is grown on the estate, benefiting from Norfolk's coastal climate before being taken to nearby Crisp Maltings for malting. The finished malt is then returned to Barsham, where it is combined with pure water drawn from the brewery's own borehole. Brewing takes place in one of the estate's historic agricultural buildings, surrounded by the fields that provide its ingredients. This close relationship between farming, malting and brewing allows Barsham to celebrate its identity as a truly Norfolk-born-and-brewed producer.
The brewery produces a range of award-winning beers that combine traditional brewing influences with contemporary craft beer styles. Each beer is named after a favourite place or person associated with the estate, creating a connection between the finished product and Barsham's local history. Quality ingredients and the character of the surrounding landscape are central to the brewery's identity. By using estate-grown barley and locally malted grain, Barsham maintains a distinctive relationship with its ingredients while supporting the agricultural and brewing traditions of North Norfolk.
Today, Barsham Brewery is also a welcoming destination for visitors exploring the Norfolk countryside. Its onsite taproom serves freshly brewed beers in a relaxed rural setting, with outdoor space, visiting street food traders and a growing programme of live music, sporting screenings and seasonal celebrations. The brewery shop offers beers to take home, while the taproom can be hired for private gatherings and events. Welcoming families and dogs, Barsham has developed into a community meeting place where visitors can enjoy locally produced beer just a short distance from the fields in which its ingredients were grown.
