Basement Beer began in 2019 as a weekend brewing hobby before growing into an independent microbrewery in Stokes Croft, one of Bristol's most creative and distinctive neighbourhoods. Operating from a small brewery on Upper York Street, the team set out to produce adventurous beers that reflected the independent spirit of the surrounding area. Rather than concentrating on a fixed range of conventional styles, Basement embraced experimentation and variety, developing an ever-changing selection of beers for local drinkers. Its modest premises and hands-on approach have become central to the brewery's character.
Collaboration with other independent businesses has played an important role in Basement Beer's development. One notable partnership brought the brewery together with Bird & Blend Tea Co, combining speciality loose-leaf teas with hops to explore unusual flavours and ingredients. The resulting beers included Cabana Cooler, featuring pineapple and papaya flavours, and a Coconut Chocolate Milk Stout designed for a richer, more indulgent drinking experience. These collaborations demonstrate Basement's willingness to experiment beyond conventional brewing ingredients and develop beers that reflect Bristol's creative food and drink culture.
The brewery has also explored the possibilities of combining speciality coffee with beer. Working with nearby Lost Horizon Coffee, Basement developed a coffee stout inspired by the aromas of freshly roasted single-origin coffee drifting into the brewery. This close relationship with neighbouring businesses reflects the brewery's emphasis on local connections and creative partnerships. Alongside its experimental releases, Basement supplies beers to pubs, bars and restaurants across Bristol in cask, keg and canned formats, helping bring its small-batch brewing to a wider local audience.
At the heart of Basement Beer is its compact onsite taproom, described by the brewery as possibly Bristol's smallest. Situated within the Stokes Croft brewery, the welcoming space allows visitors to sample an ever-changing range of beers close to where they are produced, with takeaway options also available. Regular events, including monthly quizzes, board game gatherings and crafting sessions, make the taproom a social space as well as a place to enjoy beer. Through its combination of experimental brewing, local collaborations and community-focused hospitality, Basement Beer represents the independent and inventive character of Bristol's brewing scene.
