Brewery story

About Burning Sky Brewery

Burning Sky began with the ambition of creating a brewer-led brewery dedicated to both expressive, hop-forward pale ales and the traditions of Belgian farmhouse brewing. Founded by experienced brewer Mark Tranter, the brewery produced its first beer in the autumn of 2013 using a 15-barrel brewing plant.

The brewery is based in refurbished farm buildings on the Firle Estate, beneath the South Downs in East Sussex. Its rural setting and close connection to the surrounding landscape have helped shape Burning Sky's identity as a genuine farmhouse brewery.

From the beginning, Burning Sky has combined traditional brewing practices with modern techniques and flavours. The brewery maintains its own yeast strains, selected to suit the different beer styles it produces, and is particularly recognised for its pale ales, saisons and Belgian-inspired beers.

An extensive barrel-ageing and mixed-fermentation programme forms an important part of the brewery's work, allowing beers to develop slowly in wood with fruit, wild yeast and carefully selected cultures. Burning Sky remains independently owned and operated by a small team, continuing its original aim of producing distinctive, world-class beer across a wide range of styles and formats.
