Cullercoats Brewery is a family-run North East brewery established in 2011 and based in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear. Specialising in traditional English beer, it champions home-grown hops and malt and produces award-winning cask and bottle-conditioned ales using its own yeast strain.
Brewery story
Cullercoats Brewery was established in 2011 as a family-run brewery on the North East coast, built around a love of traditional English beer and a hands-on approach to brewing. Attention to ingredients and production has remained central to its identity, with the brewery particularly championing English hops and using home-grown malt alongside its own distinctive yeast strain.
The brewery concentrates on cask and bottle-conditioned ales, producing beers that draw strongly on traditional English brewing. Its approach places emphasis on the character of British ingredients rather than following international trends, with brewing typically taking place twice a week. The result is a range of beers shaped by English malt and hops and produced with close attention to each stage of the brewing process.
Community fundraising became an important part of Cullercoats from the moment the brewery opened. For every beer sold, the brewery donated money to the RNLI, reflecting its connection with the North East coast and the lifeboat charity. The scheme contributed 3p for every pint sold and continued for fourteen years, allowing customers drinking Cullercoats beer to contribute directly to the fundraising total.
In 2025 that long-running commitment reached its target when Cullercoats' cumulative donations to the RNLI passed £80,000. The milestone brought the original 3p-per-pint fundraising scheme to a close after running continuously since 2011, with the brewery crediting its customers for helping it reach a total that supported the lifesaving work of the charity.
Today, Cullercoats continues as a family-run brewery from its base at Maurice Road Industrial Estate in Wallsend. Its focus remains on carefully produced traditional English beer, combining English ingredients, its own yeast culture and small-scale hands-on production while retaining the strong North East identity that has shaped the brewery since its establishment in 2011.
