Independent Sunderland brewery founded in 2019, reviving the Vaux name two decades after the city's historic Vaux Breweries closed. The brewery produces a contemporary range of beers from its 10-barrel brewhouse.
Brewery story
Vaux was revived in Sunderland in 2019 by school friends Steven Smith and Michael Thompson, bringing the historic brewing name back to the city two decades after the original Vaux Breweries closed in 1999.
Initially brewing its beers at other breweries, the team spent more than a year searching for a permanent home before securing premises close to Sunderland city centre and the Stadium of Light.
The new site was developed as both a brewery and taproom, with space for Vaux beer alongside guest beers and a mural by Sunderland artist Kathryn Robertson celebrating the city's brewing, shipbuilding and football heritage.
Production began onsite around the end of 2020, with early brews including Decent Days and Nights, A Hazy Shade of Citra and Black Wave marking the return of Vaux beer production to Sunderland.
Today Vaux operates a 10-barrel brewery in Sunderland, continuing the city's brewing name with a modern independent brewery while retaining a strong connection to its local heritage.
