Gravity Well Brewing is an independent London brewery founded in 2018. Beginning as a 100-litre nanobrewery in a railway arch in Leyton, Gravity Well grew into a larger production brewery in Tottenham in 2023. Its beers focus on hop-forward pale ales and IPAs, intensely flavoured fruit sours and smoothie beers, with occasional stouts and dry-hopped pilsners. Everything produced by the brewery is vegan.
Brewery story
Gravity Well began brewing in 2018 as a tiny nanobrewery operating from a railway arch in Leyton. Its original brewing system produced batches of just 100 litres, with most of the beer initially sold directly through a small onsite taproom that opened on Saturdays.
In its early years, a smaller amount of Gravity Well beer also made its way to local pubs and shops, but the brewery remained a highly local and small-scale operation centred on its Leyton home.
The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020 forced a significant change. With its usual route to customers disrupted, Gravity Well began canning beer with the help of a mobile canning company and started distributing releases including Cosmic Dust and Galaxies Apart to drinkers around the country.
Demand grew more quickly than expected. The original railway arch was eventually packed with as many fermenters as the brewery could accommodate, leading to a lengthy search for a larger production site.
That search resulted in Gravity Well moving production to Compass West Industrial Estate in Tottenham. The new brewery was operational by February 2023 and provided the additional space and equipment needed for the business to continue expanding its range and production.
Gravity Well's brewing is now particularly focused on hop-forward pale ales, IPAs and DIPAs, ranging from soft and hazy interpretations to clearer and drier beers. Intensely flavoured fruit sours and fruit smoothie beers have also become an important part of the range, alongside occasional stouts and brewery-favourite dry-hopped pilsners.
Everything produced by Gravity Well is vegan, reflecting founder Ben's own values since becoming vegan in 2018. The philosophy extends beyond the beer to the Leyton taproom, where everything from the drinks and snacks to the cleaning products is vegan.
Although brewing has moved to Tottenham, Gravity Well's public taproom remains in Leyton. The brewery describes the venue as an important social space as well as somewhere to drink its freshest beer, with 10 draught lines and a broader selection of drinks. The Tottenham production brewery does not currently have a public taproom.
