Brewery story

About Purple Moose Brewery

Purple Moose Brewery traces its roots back to 1995 when founder Lawrence Washington began brewing at home, developing his own recipes from raw ingredients and discovering a passion that would shape his career. Early creations, including beers with playful names inspired by Monty Python and Pink Floyd, laid the foundations for what would become one of Wales' best-known independent breweries.

After several years spent refining recipes, training and researching the brewing industry, Lawrence established Purple Moose Brewery in Porthmadog. The brewery officially opened in June 2005 with a 10-barrel brewhouse, using locally sourced water from the foothills of Snowdonia alongside entirely UK-grown malted barley to produce beers with a distinctive Welsh identity.

Growing demand quickly led to expansion, with additional fermentation capacity followed by the installation of a modern 40-barrel brewhouse in 2013. Today, Purple Moose Brewery is capable of producing more than 57,000 pints each week while maintaining its commitment to quality, consistency and independent brewing. Its beers have earned more than 100 major awards, including Champion Beer of Britain category golds and Great Taste Awards, making the brewery one of the most decorated producers in Wales.
