Wimbledon Brewery

Wimbledon Brewery draws on a brewing heritage stretching back centuries. Its modern brewery stands on the site of Merton Priory, where brewing took place during the Middle Ages, while commercial brewing in Wimbledon later included William Watney's Wheatsheaf Brewery and the Wimbledon Brewery established by William Cook on the High Street in 1832.

The original Wimbledon Brewery passed through several owners before William Quartermaine took over in 1880 and constructed an imposing five-storey tower brewery. In January 1889, a major fire badly damaged its interior and destroyed the brewing equipment and machinery. That history lives on in the modern brewery's identity, with its logo combining the old brewery tower with a phoenix, barley and hops to represent both the revival of Wimbledon brewing and its focus on quality ingredients.

Today's Wimbledon Brewery sees itself as a custodian of these local brewing traditions while introducing them to a new generation of drinkers. Its brewing team consists of qualified brewers supported by ongoing training, combining traditional brewing knowledge with a contemporary approach to producing beer in South West London.

The team is supported by consulting Master Brewer Derek Prentice, whose long career has included brewing at renowned London breweries including Truman's, Young's and Fuller's. A Diploma Master Brewer and Fellow of the Institute of Brewing and Distilling, Prentice has also received SIBA's Lifetime Achievement Award and was named Brewer of the Year by the British Guild of Beer Writers in 2013.
