Brewery story
Ashover Brewery was founded in 2007 in the picturesque Derbyshire village of Ashover, beginning life on a modest 3.5-barrel brewing system installed in the garage of a cottage beside the Old Poet's Corner pub. From these humble beginnings, the brewery developed a reputation for producing characterful, high-quality ales inspired by the surrounding countryside. Its beers became popular with local freehouses and beer festivals, helping establish Ashover as a recognised name within Derbyshire's independent brewing scene.
As demand grew, the brewery outgrew its original premises and relocated in 2015 to a larger 10-barrel facility in nearby Clay Cross. The move allowed production to increase and its beers to reach pubs and festivals further afield. Over the years, Ashover collected numerous industry awards and developed a loyal following for its core range. Notable beers included Zoo, a vibrant pale ale brewed with Mosaic and Citra hops, delivering tropical fruit flavours, and Coffin Lane, a rich, full-bodied stout.
Despite its success and established reputation, the original Ashover Brewery eventually entered liquidation. Rather than allow the name and its beers to disappear, a group of local investors stepped in during 2025, purchasing the brewery and its brands and relaunching the business as Ashover Brew Co. The new venture brought together co-owners Lewis Bassett, Andy Clarke, Richard Walker, Jon Hardwick and Gethin Jones, united by a desire to preserve an important part of the area's brewing heritage while creating opportunities for its future development.
The revived brewery is led by Head Brewer Janine Shorrock, supported by experienced Ashover team member Brian Exford and Assistant Brewer Jack Burton. Together, they aim to build on the brewery's established recipes while exploring fresh ideas and brewing techniques. Their approach combines approachable, flavourful beers with a strong appreciation for Derbyshire's brewing traditions and the nearby Peak District landscape. With renewed local ownership and a dedicated brewing team, Ashover Brew Co is working to carry its award-winning legacy into a new chapter.
