Brewery story
Battle Brewery was established in 2017 in the historic East Sussex town of Battle, a place closely associated with the Norman Conquest of 1066. Operating from an eight-barrel brewery at Woodmans Yard on Penhurst Lane, the business set out to create distinctive beers rooted in the character of the surrounding area. Its location in the heart of 1066 Country provides a strong sense of identity, reflected in the brewery's name, branding and approach to beer. From its beginnings, Battle Brewery has supplied local pubs, cafés and shops, helping strengthen the independent beer scene across the town and surrounding countryside.
The brewery's philosophy combines respect for traditional brewing with a willingness to explore contemporary flavours. Rather than attempting to reinvent established beer styles, Battle focuses on refining them through careful ingredient selection and attention to detail throughout the brewing process. Its approach is centred on creating memorable, well-balanced beers that deliver quality and character in every glass. This commitment is reflected in its range of freshly brewed ales, including Arrowhead, and in its emphasis on making beers that appeal to both experienced real ale drinkers and those discovering independent brewing.
In 2021, Battle Brewery expanded its connection with the local community by opening a dedicated micropub taproom at the top of Battle High Street. The venue provides a direct outlet for the brewery's beers, originally serving ales straight from the cask alongside its bottled range. Today, the taproom offers a selection of Battle's freshly brewed beers together with carefully chosen guest ales, ciders, wines and spirits from other local producers. By showcasing drinks from across 1066 Country, the pub supports neighbouring independent businesses while giving visitors an opportunity to experience the brewery's beers in a relaxed and welcoming setting.
The Battle Brewery Taproom has developed into a lively community meeting place, bringing people together through beer, music and shared interests. Its regular programme includes live performances, pub quizzes, writers' workshops and other social gatherings, reflecting the brewery's belief that a good pub should be about more than simply serving drinks. Whether visitors are enjoying a pint of locally brewed ale, discovering a guest beer or attending an event, the taproom provides a welcoming space in the centre of Battle. Through its combination of independent brewing, local partnerships and community hospitality, Battle Brewery continues to celebrate the traditions and character of its historic Sussex home.
