Independent Northumberland brewery founded in 2018 on the historic Ford & Etal Estate. Based in converted hunt kennels near the Cheviot Hills, Cheviot produces traditional and contemporary cask and bottled ales inspired by local landscapes and history, with an onsite taproom, brewery tours and the Black Bull Inn at Etal.
Brewery story
Cheviot Brewery began with a conversation over a few beers in a Barcelona brewery tap in 2015. What started as a passing idea became a serious ambition for Pete, Jonathan and Neil, who spent the following three years researching and planning their own brewery. With support from the historic Ford & Etal Estate in North Northumberland, they transformed former hunt kennels at Slainsfield into a working brewhouse, producing their first beers in 2018.
Situated on the edge of the Cheviot Hills, the brewery draws inspiration from Northumberland's landscapes, landmarks and history. Its 7.5-barrel plant produces a mix of traditional and contemporary ales, from award-winning bitters and refreshing pale ales to full-flavoured stouts. With an emphasis on balance and drinkability, Cheviot's beers have become regular fixtures in pubs across the North East, Cumbria, Yorkshire and the Scottish Borders.
The brewery has also developed into a destination for visitors exploring the Ford & Etal Estate. Cheviot Tap, located beside the brewhouse and Slainsfield Wood, offers fresh cask and keg beer, wood-fired pizzas, indoor and outdoor seating, events and brewery tours. The business also operates the Black Bull Inn in the nearby village of Etal, extending its connection to the local community and hospitality scene.
From an idea shared in Barcelona to an established rural brewery supplying hundreds of outlets, Cheviot has remained closely tied to the place where its beers are made. Its combination of locally inspired ales, traditional pub hospitality and a welcoming brewery tap reflects a simple ambition: to brew beers the team enjoys drinking and share them with as many people as possible.
