Brewery story
Chislet Brewery was established in 2023 by two friends, John and Lewis, who decided to turn their shared enthusiasm for homebrewing into an independent commercial brewery. After spending several years developing their brewing skills and experimenting with recipes, the pair took the opportunity to establish a dedicated production facility in Chislet, a village near Canterbury in Kent. Their ambition was to create a small brewery focused on producing traditional-style beers while making use of the region's strong agricultural and brewing heritage. The transition from homebrewing to commercial production represented a significant commitment, requiring the founders to develop not only their brewing operation but also the practical infrastructure needed to supply beer to customers and local businesses.
The brewery began operating from Unit 32 at Chislet Business Park, where John and Lewis transformed an empty industrial unit into a working microbrewery. Establishing the site involved sourcing and modifying brewing equipment, preparing the premises for production and securing the licences required to manufacture and sell beer commercially. Much of the early development was carried out by the founders themselves, reflecting the hands-on approach that continues to define the business. Starting with a modest operation, Chislet gradually expanded its production and distribution as its beers became established among local drinkers. The brewery's growth has been closely connected to the support of pubs, micropubs and independent retailers throughout Kent.
Chislet Brewery concentrates on producing traditional-style ales that balance familiar British brewing influences with the character of carefully selected hops. The brewery uses a combination of locally sourced and international hop varieties, allowing it to explore different flavour profiles while retaining an appreciation for established beer styles. An important part of its ingredient sourcing is its connection with Deal Hop Farm, a community-based hop-growing project in Kent. By incorporating locally grown hops into its brewing, Chislet supports regional producers and celebrates the county's longstanding association with hop cultivation. This approach reflects the founders' interest in creating beers with a connection to their surroundings while remaining open to ingredients and influences from further afield.
As the brewery has developed, Chislet has expanded its presence across Kent through supplies to local pubs and micropubs, alongside online sales and canned beer available through retail outlets. The business has also opened an onsite taproom at Chislet Business Park, allowing visitors to enjoy its beers just metres from where they are brewed. The taproom provides a direct connection between the brewery and its customers, offering an opportunity to discover its range and meet the people behind the beers. Chislet is also a member of the Society of Independent Brewers, reflecting its place within the wider independent brewing community. Today, the brewery continues to build on its homebrewing origins, combining traditional beer styles, locally sourced ingredients and a commitment to supplying independently brewed beer across Kent.
