Brewery story
Collyfobble Brewery was established in 2017 in the Derbyshire village of Barlow, situated in the countryside near Chesterfield and the Peak District. Based in the grounds of The Peacock at Barlow, the brewery was created to produce distinctive, high-quality real ales with a strong connection to the local pub and surrounding community. Its location places brewing at the centre of the pub's identity, allowing customers to enjoy beers produced just a short distance from where they are served. From the outset, Collyfobble has focused on combining the familiarity and drinkability of traditional British beer styles with carefully selected ingredients and contemporary brewing influences. The brewery's emphasis on approachable, characterful ales reflects its ambition to create beers suited to both everyday drinking and special occasions.
The brewery operates a 4.5-barrel brewhouse housed in a purpose-designed building behind The Peacock at Barlow. The brewing equipment is visible through large glass panels incorporated into the structure, giving visitors a view of the production facilities and creating a direct connection between the pub and its working brewery. The site also includes a dedicated tasting room available for private hire, providing space for groups to enjoy Collyfobble beers in a brewery setting. Much of the beer produced is destined for The Peacock, although the brewery also distributes its ales to other local establishments, including the neighbouring Tickled Trout Inn. Its wider wholesale activity allows Collyfobble beers to reach drinkers across the Peak District and surrounding areas.
Collyfobble's core range demonstrates its commitment to traditional real ale styles while incorporating distinctive hop varieties and modern flavour profiles. Bob On!, a 3.8% Derbyshire Best Bitter, combines traditional malt character with notes of toffee and balancing hop bitterness. 'Sup Wiyo is a 4.3% pale ale brewed with classic American 'C' hops, offering fruity and floral characteristics, while Grindleford Grit is a 4.1% single-hopped pale ale featuring Nelson Sauvin, known for its gooseberry and white wine notes. Barlow Sesh, a 4.2% session IPA, uses Mosaic hops to deliver tropical fruit flavours, and IPA Up, at 5.2%, combines a substantial malt backbone with a pronounced fruity hop character. Together, these beers represent a range designed to appeal to both traditional cask ale drinkers and those seeking contemporary hop-forward styles.
Alongside its regular beers, Collyfobble produces limited releases that explore different malt and hop combinations. Mizzlin' Steady, a 4.5% hoppy red ale, combines Mosaic and Bramling Cross hops with a distinctive malt bill to create flavours of stone fruit and berries. Black Ower Bill's Mother's, a 4.8% Irish-style stout, brings together roasted coffee and dark chocolate characteristics with oats that contribute a smooth, creamy texture. These releases allow the brewery to experiment beyond its core range while maintaining its focus on balanced and drinkable real ales. Today, Collyfobble continues to brew from its home at The Peacock at Barlow, supplying the pub and other local venues while celebrating Derbyshire's real ale traditions. Its combination of onsite brewing, regional distribution and a distinctive brewery setting has established it as part of the local independent beer scene.
