Independent Cumbrian brewery established in 2002, known for distinctive, flavour-forward beers spanning highly hopped pale ales, classic British styles, juicy IPAs, crisp lagers, stouts, porters and sours. Brewing is now based at its Flookburgh brewery near Morecambe Bay.
Brewery story
Hawkshead Brewery began in 2002 in a barn just outside the village of Hawkshead in the Lake District. Part of a new wave of British craft brewers, it built its reputation around highly hopped, flavour-forward beers at a time when that approach was still relatively unusual in the UK.
Growth led to a move in 2006 to the Mill Yard beside the River Kent at Staveley, where Hawkshead installed a new 20-barrel brewhouse and created its brewery tap, the Beer Hall. As the brewery continued to expand, production also developed at Flookburgh in southern Cumbria.
Following changes to the Staveley operation in 2024, brewing became centred at Flookburgh. Today Hawkshead produces a broad range, from classic British styles and heavily hopped pale ales to juicy IPAs, crisp lagers, stouts, porters and sours, using Cumbrian water alongside malt and hops sourced from around the world.
